Tree Talks

The Central New York Genealogical Society began its quarterly, Tree Talks, in 1961 to print

abstracts of pre-1850 records of historical and genealogical interest from five Central New York

counties. By 1964, when New York State chartered the society as a nonprofit, educational

corporation, coverage had expanded to 46 of the state's 62 counties. In the past few years,

CNYGS published abstracts and transcriptions of records for 33 counties, records that are at least

100 years old.

Starting in 2020, the focus now is on the Central New York counties of Onondaga, Oswego,

Oneida, Cayuga, Madison, and Cortland, plus Jefferson County. In the March, June and

September issues, there are articles and tips indicating where to locate records for those counties

that were dropped.

Material printed in Tree Talks is largely transcribed by Central New York Genealogical Society

members. Genealogical and historical records printed include those from surrogates' courts and

county clerks' offices, plus abstracts of church, cemetery, and newspaper vital records. Members

have supplied many Bible records and day books of doctors, ministers, and storekeepers, as well

as post office dead letter files. Those types of records will continue to be included, as long as

they have not been published elsewhere.

Beginning in 2023 Tree Talks will be published 3 times a year. The electronic publications will

be released by about April 15, August 15 and December 15. The issues mailed to our members will

be released by about April 30, August 30 and December 30.
